When the camera was invented, there were photographers who claimed to have invented a technique where they could capture images of the spirit or ghost from a dead person together wil the living relatives. This was called Spirit Photography. It was only years later that the double exposure technique was, well... exposed. When I was teaching photography about 160 years later, the camera was still just as mysterious. How light, shadow, mechanics and magic creates a replica of the real world, is not something we think about when we pull our phones form our pocket and snap a selfie in the bathroom mirror. From Mélièr's journey to the moon in 1902, to Artemis II in 2026, photography remains an important art and science. Like the surrealist ManRay said: "I photograph what I don't want to paint, and I paint what I can't photograph". In this calendar I continue my exploration of the relationship between technology and mysticism.
